The Marlène and Paolo Fresco Fellowship offers a unique opportunity for postdoctoral scholars to delve into the cultural exchanges between the African continent and the Mediterranean world from 1250 to 1750. This six-month residential fellowship, taking place in the spring of 2025 (January-June), aims to stimulate scholarship in various fields related to African history, including art history, archaeology, musicology, and more.
Eligibility:
- Applicants must hold a PhD at the time of application and should not be pursuing a second PhD.
- Fluency in English, Italian, or French is required.
- Strong background in African history and its global exchanges during the early modern period is essential.

Selected scholars will conduct original research in Florence at I Tatti, with access to local resources such as libraries, archives, and museums. The fellowship covers living expenses with a grant of USD $5,200 per month, along with a one-time relocation supplement of up to USD $1,500.
Applicants must reside in the Florence area and spend at least three days a week at the Center. Housing arrangements, including rent-free apartments or housing subsidies, will be provided as applicable.
The application process involves submitting materials electronically by February 29, 2024, including a PhD certificate, research proposal, and curriculum vitae. Additionally, two recommendation letters must be submitted online by March 4, 2024, written in English, French, or Italian.
