The Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH (German Agency for International Cooperation) is an international enterprise owned by the German Federal government, operating in many fields across more than 130 countries.
In Nigeria, GIZ’s portfolio includes among others, a programme to support the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in its regional integration goals. The programme aims to strengthen sector-specific capacities in the areas of Peace and Security, Customs and Trade as weir as Strategic Management and Organizational Development in the ECOWAS Commission.

Background

- We work with businesses, civil society actors and research institutions, fostering successful interaction between development policy and other policy fields and areas of activity.
- Our main commissioning party is the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
- The registered offices of GIZ are in Bonn and Eschborn. In 2019, we generated a business volume of around EUR 3.1 billion. Our 22,199 employees, almost 70 per cent of whom are national staff, work in around 120 countries. As a recognised development service provider, we currently have 556 development workers in action in partner countries.
- Furthermore, in 2019, the Centre for International Migration and Development (CIM), which is run jointly by GIZ and the German Federal Employment Agency, placed 262 integrated experts and 515 returning experts with local employers in our partner countries, or provided them with financial support, advice or other services.
Programme
- The global programme “Alliances for Trade Facilitation” (A4TF), being implemented by GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), focuses on carrying out trade facilitation projects in developing and emerging markets in cooperation with businesses, associations, and chambers of industry and commerce, as well as customs authorities and ministries.
- The goal is to streamline and lower the costs of compliance with trade processes within the framework of the WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement.
- In Nigeria, a project to simplify, standardize and harmonize border procedures and formalities is being implemented together with public and private sector partners. GIZ intends to hire an intern to support the implementation of activities under A4TF and WATIP when necessary.
Responsibilities & Tasks
Responsibility:
- The Intern will support both the Global Alliance for Trade Facilitation and West Africa Trade Integration Program.
Tasks:
The Intern will be assisting the Project Management Units of the projects with the following:
- Support in the day-to-day implementation of activities and assigned tasks
- Support the organization of meetings with relevant stakeholders
- Liaise with Technical staff and Administrative officers for drafting requests of goods and services and supporting documents
- Contribute to the preparation of documents, working papers, and publications resulting from activities, including drafting notes and preparing technical annexes
- Support the monitoring and update of the project’s management online system
- Undertake other tasks as may be required
- An internship report will be required at the end of the assignment. A specific topic will be agreed upon start of duty.
Required Qualifications, Competencies and Experience
Qualifications:
- Degree in International Relations, Economics, or similar Professional experience.
- A postgraduate Degree in International Relations, International Economics, International Law or related discipline would be an advantage.
Professional Experience and Other Requirements:
- Strong organizational skills
- Good negotiation and communication skills
- Report writing experience
- Ability to build relationships and maintain professional reputation
- Confident with MS Office programs (especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Very good written and spoken English language
- High level of commitment
- Ability to work independently
- Enthusiastic about new challenges
- Ability to upskill as required.
