How to get a job under the FBI behavioral analysis unit (BAU)

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is the lead law enforcement agency in the country. The FBI BAU is a place to aim for if you wish to serve the country and help fight against international crimes and injustice.

To get a job as a BAU Agent, you must meet specific eligibility criteria and undergo different training processes.

FBI behavioural analysis unit (BAU)

The Behavioral Analysis Unit is a subsection of the National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime, Federal Bureau of Investigation.

It is responsible for detecting and analyzing criminal activities using behavioral and intelligence data from research, case experience, and investigations.

The BAU is trained to respond to time-sensitive crimes, typically involving national threats or acts of violence.

There are core traits that one must have for professional competency in this role, including:

  • Emotional detachment
  • Strong intuition and analytical skills
  • Experience conducting investigations and research
  • Comprehension of criminal minds

Steps to becoming a FBI BAU agent

Step 1: Earn a degree in a relevant field

The first step in getting a job as an FBI BAU agent is to have a degree. Although it is not necessary, having a degree related to the job description gives you an advantage 

Step 2: Internships

The FBI provides internship opportunities for interested students. These internships aim to offer students experiences and assist the FBI in building a pipeline of entry-level employees. there are four types of FBI internship programs:

  • Volunteer internship program
  • Honors internship program
  • Collegiate hiring initiative
  • Visiting science program

Step 3: Gain work experience

You need at least three years of related work experience as a BAU analyst.

You can gain it from working with the local law enforcement agencies or lawyers, which gives you knowledge and skills in dealing with criminals.

Step 4: Apply for job position

The eligibility criteria are candidates must:

  • Be between 23-37 years
  • Be U.S citizens
  • Pass the drug, fitness, and polygraph test. candidates must also pass a credit and criminal background check
  • Have the required work experience
  • Possess a valid U.S driving license
  • Have a first or college degree

Step 5: Undertake training

After applying and being hired, you will undergo intense training for 20 weeks. The training involves case exercises, combat training, firearms training, academic and operational skills.

There is also high-level training for intelligence to detect and prevent threats to national security. E.g., attacks like 9/11.

The training is usually held in their National Training Academy Center in Quantico.

Step 6: Intelligence training

The basic training for all new agents is the same. Further training is added based on job preference. As BAU Agents, well-equipped intelligence training helps in BAU proficiency.

Step 7: Get assignments

This stage is doing operational work and assisting in specified work functions. This is an essential step for new agents.

Step 8: Apply for BAU

Apply for BAU and get assigned to the National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime, NCVAC. The BAU and BSU are divisions of the NCVAC.

You can choose your area of specialization amongst:

  • Crimes against adults
  • Crimes against children
  • Counterterrorism/threat assessment

Work of a FBI BAU agent

The role of an FBI BAU Agent is an important one. Every agent contributes to the responsibility of preventing crimes and saving lives, working alongside local and international law enforcement agencies to maintain peace and order.

Here is a list of fundamental roles of an FBI BAU Agent.

  • Investigating and analyzing .data at crime scenes to recreate them
  • Profiling criminal behaviors and patterns to counter attacks
  • Interrogating and detecting criminal activities
  • Creating a database for all criminal activities to recognize patterns
  • Assess future threats by suspected individuals and organizations, both local and international.
  • Having valuable insights and ideas on investigations
