Is your newsroom based in Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, Togo, Uganda, or Zambia? Are you eager to enhance the capabilities of your CheckDesk? Here’s an opportunity to consider—the Code for Africa CheckDesk Fellowship 2024.
Code for Africa, through its African Fact-Checking Alliance (AFCA), presents an intensive six to eight-month incubation program tailored for media organizations within the mentioned countries. The focus is on establishing a CheckDesk, a dedicated fact-checking/verification unit within a news organization, fact-checking organization, or Civil Society Organizations (CSOs).
Key Aspects of the Incubation Program:
- Financial Support: Successful organizations will receive a modest grant to cover eligible activities and costs.
- Technical Support: Participants will undergo hands-on technical training, followed by one-on-one project mentorship from CfA’s experienced technologists, data analysts, multimedia producers, and editors.
- Publishing Support: Newsrooms will publish their fact-checking products on their platforms, with additional assistance to publish internationally.
- Organization Building: Organizations will receive online consultations to understand their audience, refine their fact-checking offering, and develop potential revenue models.
- Growing Reach: Amplification and growth support will be provided, including scaling/syndication assistance.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Must not be associated with any paramilitary or security organization.
- Based in Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, Togo, Uganda, or Zambia.
- Possess an existing online presence or commit to establishing one at the program’s commencement.
- Have internet access and capable devices for participating journalists/trainees.
- Skilled and available editorial or managerial staff committed to participation.
- Commit to timely and open communication and broadcasting/publishing content produced through the program.
- Fluency in either English or French for trainees.
