Empowering Girls in STEM: AFS Intercultural Programs Scholarship
This scholarship program is an exceptional opportunity for girls who are passionate about making a difference in the world and eager to tackle today’s most pressing global challenges.
Despite women constituting over half of the college-educated workforce worldwide, they remain significantly underrepresented in STEM fields, comprising only 28% of professionals. To address this disparity, AFS Intercultural Programs has launched a dedicated initiative aimed at empowering the next generation of women in STEM.
Program Overview: Scholarship recipients will engage in a comprehensive 12-week all-virtual program, meticulously crafted to nurture emerging STEM skills, foster global competence, and drive social impact in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania. Through a dynamic curriculum blending theoretical learning with practical application, scholars will deepen their understanding of STEM disciplines while honing critical global competencies.
Key Program Components:
- Immersive exploration of emerging and critical STEM skills and fields
- Rigorous global competence education
- Interactive sessions focusing on social impact and sustainability
- Collaborative team projects addressing real-world challenges, with a focus on climate change and the energy transition

Eligibility Criteria:
- Open to young women worldwide
- Ages 15 to 17.5 at the program start date
- Proficiency in English, both online and in a classroom setting
- Demonstrated interest in STEM, sustainability, and global competencies
- Eagerness to engage with diverse global peers and explore new cultures
- Access to digital devices and stable internet connection
- Webcam and microphone for online dialogue sessions
