About 40% of children miss out on school and have to work to survive while nearly 2 million children have lost one or both parents to an AIDS-related disease.

Child Safeguarding

  • Level 3: The post holder will have contact with children and/or young people either frequently (e.g. once a week or more) or intensively (e.g. four days in one month or more or overnight) because they work country programs; or are visiting country programs; or because they are responsible for implementing the police checking/vetting process staff.

Role Purpose

  • Support the state team to ensure commitment and involvement of local authorities and community members in the programme; and support community mobilization to ensure participation, and sustainability of the humanitarian programme as well as that the voices of community members, including women and children are heard.

Key Areas of Accountabilities
Objective 1 – Strategy Development:

  • Assist in all community mobilization activities including community entry.
  • Assist in building new relationships with communities and maintaining existing cordial relationships between communities and Save the Children.
  • Engage with the community structures and local authorities in program implementation, feedback meetings and meetings when needed
  • Facilitate meetings of the community coalition and other relevant community structures.
  • Prepare monthly reports of activities carried out
  • Ensure that the voices of children form the basis of Save the Children’s program activities.
  • Ensure Save the Children’s visibility is seen in the implementing communities
  • Actively participate in all Save the Children and CSO Coalition-driven activities in the community
  • Support any other Save the Children-led activities as may be required

Objective 2 – Influencing:

  • Develop good knowledge of local structures, parliamentary and political processes and key decision-making structures and how to influence them.
  • Assist in working with children groups for child-led and child-focused community-level activities
  • Publicise the feedback mechanism for communicating Save the Children programmes
  • Produce reports, briefing papers and presentations for internal and external audiences, as directed.

Objective 3 – Collaboration & Representation:

  • Develop and sustain strategic relationships with communities and other state and non-state agencies.
  • Support in facilitating capacity building of staff from Save the Children and partner agencies in mobilization activities.
  • Represent Save the Children as assigned by the team lead state, LGA and community levels.
  • Support in maintaining a network of external contacts with key individuals in the government, NGO sector, civil society and the media.

Objective 4 – Programme Development:

  • Provide program support on community mobilization to the state programme team
  • Support implementation of community mobilization plan in collaboration with the team and ensure implementation
  • In collaboration with the rest of the programme team prepare and facilitate trainings
  • Participate in the preparation or review of programme monitoring and evaluation tools where necessary
  • Ensure correct use of programme monitoring and evaluation (recording) tools, including analysis

Requirements
Essential:

  • A Degree in Communications, Journalism, Social Work, Psychology, Health, or a related social science field.
  • A minimum of a year of experience in community mobilization/campaign and BCC programming will be given priority consideration.
  • Desired Number of Years’ Experience – 1-year post-NYSC (community mobilization and engagement, social services delivery with a focus on governance and enhanced voice and accountability)
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to effectively handle multiple tasks and meet strict deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, flexibility, adaptability and ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
  • Good computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets, email/internet) and ability to be self-supporting in most administrative tasks.
  • Fluent in English and Hausa Languages (written and verbal).
  • Good understanding of strategies for achieving child protection, Psychosocial programming policies through participatory processes, and the links with gender, diversity and other aspects of identity.
  • Excellent conceptual and analytical skills and demonstrable ability to think strategically, innovatively and practically to ensure the achievement of desired change objectives.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of audiences at local and state levels.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with partner agencies and key contacts in the government, NGO, civil society (coalitions) and media sectors.
